Do you think the Boy Scouts should be renamed?

asked by ROLLE2323 on October 12, 2017

Drop the Boy and just call them the Scouts which would seem to cover all situations.

That should do it. Of course, I did have the idea to call the new scouts the "It" Scouts....LOL!!!

I don't know what to make of the situation....what becomes of the girl scouts? I don't have an objection to opening it up to girls.....unless it is part of a politically correct answer to a problem that doesn't exist. I was a scout as a youngster as were most of my friends and male relatives. I don't think any of us would recognize the organization today.
My gut tells me the organization is in its death throws.....and perhaps it is for the best.

The girl scout council is not happy. They view this as a bid to "steal" their girls. However, the boy scouts do have programs that are not available to girl scouts. Perhaps if the girl scout council had revamped their programs about 20 years ago, to make an equivalent to Eagle Scout available, for example, we would not now have father's agitating to have their daughters accepted into the boy scouts....(which is what has happened).

No, I can't think of a single reason why they should.

I think it should be non-gender specific.

I like the Eagle Scout label, though I don't know about their particular organisation (I'm sure though I will soon find out from peeps in Tennessee :)

Sea scouts is another example of non-gender specific.

The Eagle Scout is the top level of the Boy Scouts. My father and brother were both Eagle Scouts, and my father went on to become a Scout Master. I still remember one ceremony where he was presented with the Order of the Beaver....LOLOL!!!

Order of the Beaver?! I can't imagine what I might have been tempted to say in humourous retort on a less family-friendly site... ;)

Thanks re the Eagles info, Rolle.

The Boy scouts, as an institution of grooming young boys into productive adult men, is dead.

To be honest the thought the boy was dropped years ago. I was a cub scout..., a scout,,,, a venture scout..a scout leader for a few years.....but... never a boy scout. The Scouting organisation is or was a fantastic footing for youngsters. I've see lads change in over the week long camp...the first time many had cooked for themselves.....or washed with just a flannel .... to have to boil your own water to wash in...... fantastic times.

My father was very involved in scouting. I learned a lot of scouting tips just from being around him. He taught me how to dice onions quite easily, and told me that was the "boy scout method".

Disguised, do you remember the 'washing your mouth out with Fairy liquid for swearing' routine? Happy days.

Yes. It sure isn't The Boy Scouts anymore. Lets just call it Scouts for Everybody! I think there are reasons for keeping the genders apart at times. And it is well known, that the genders often do well when separated at times.
