What does chip and pin mean? Americans still use checks, and many pay bills online.

Chip & pin: put your credit or debit card into the machine reader then type in your personal four digit pin number. You don't have this over there?

Oh yeah, everyone has a debit card. I was using debit cards a 1000 years ago. See thats how the media messes up the truth. Everyone gets money through the machines.....with a pin number.

Valentine- I know this is a predominantly American site but I am appalled that you have used the word Check instead of Cheque. I'm aware you are thinking of moving to the country but please maintain proper English until you do :)

Seriously, as the Q was directed at America-landers, I thought it only polite to get into the lingo a bit, very English to be so, I thought.

We have credit and debit cards....I use credit cards and pay them off with a check one a month. Yep they are checks Stateside, they come in many "colors" as well. Hehehe, two countries separated by a common language?

I don't see too many people using checks in stores, but the debit card is everywhere; so much so that most people rarely use cash any more. I've seen people pay for a pack of gum with a debit card...

Yes, I use Contactless payment debit cards now quite frequently - upto £30 ($35?) - for small transactions too, but not yet 'gum' ;)
